Vassar picks Northwestern
Northwestern's crazy recruiting day just got a little bit more exciting, and point guard Johnnie Vassar has a lot to do with it.
On the same day that Pat Fitzgerald hauled in commitments from four-star cornerback Parrker Westphal and unranked linebacker Hamilton Anoa'i, Chris Collins got in on the action when Vassar became the fifth commit in NU basketball's Class of 2014.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound guard is from Chicago, but Vassar currently plays for San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) Jserra Catholic.
Vassar's recruitment largely flew under the radar, but his commitment ends Collins' first class with a bang, as Vassar will join Bryant McIntosh, Gavin Skelly, Scott Lindsey and standout Victor Law in Evanston next fall.
Vassar's commitment leaves no more available scholarships and essentially rules out the possibility of bringing in any transfers next year, barring the release of a current player from scholarship. It also seems to eliminate any chances of Mike Turner returning to the program.
Now, McIntosh might not be Northwestern's only "point guard of the future." Vassar is ultra-quick and ultra-athletic with impressive playmaking abilities. Although his shooting range is limited, he'll have plenty of time to improve.
After bouncing around several different high schools across the country, which may have hurt his stock as a recruit, Vassar is finally coming home.
