McGee commits to NU
The two-star safety from Mansfield (Texas) Legacy committed to Northwestern as a greyshirt today on his official visit. As a greyshirt, he will be a member of the Wildcats' Class of 2015, even though he will graduate from Legacy this year and sign with the program on Wednesday.
McGee had previously been a soft verbal commitment to Texas-San Antonio as member of the Class of 2014. But he reopened his recruitment to take an official visit to Northwestern shortly after receiving an offer from the Wildcats. He arrived with his father on Friday and spent both Friday and Saturday night on campus.
How did that visit go?
"Went great," McGee stated via text. "Committed to NU."
McGee will sign his national letter of intent on Wednesday, National Signing Day. He will graduate from Legacy in June and then take classes at a community college next fall before enrolling at Northwestern next January.
He told WildcatReport last Thursday that he reopened his recruitment because Northwestern offered a unique combination of big-time football and big-time academics.
"You look at where the school stands academically, with their APR, the internships, graduate programs, it's tough to beat," he said. "Northwestern is in the Big Ten, they've gone to bowl games five of the last six years. It's just a great opportunity."
Northwestern started recruiting McGee just two weeks ago, shortly after defensive back Jordan Thomas decommitted and pledged Oklahoma.
