Northwestern’s 54-point explosion earned the Wildcats a victory over Michigan State on Saturday afternoon. It also earned a pair of Wildcats Big Ten honors on Monday morning.
Running back Justin Jackson was named a co-offensive player of the week, while Solomon Vault earned the special teams POW from the conference. Both played key roles in the scoring barrage that helped Northwestern to its second straight Big Ten road win.
Jackson rushed for a career-high 188 yards and 29- and 26-yard touchdowns in the Wildcats’ win. The junior from Carol Stream (Ill.) Glenbard North now leads the Big Ten in rushing with 698 yards, and ranks fifth with six touchdowns.
This is Jackson’s first offensive player of the week award. The last Wildcat to win it was Kain Colter, in 2012.
Vault earned his award with an electrifying 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown late in the third quarter against the Spartans. It was a key play in restoring momentum after Michigan State had scored 14 unanswered points to cut the Wildcats lead to 33-31.
It was the fourth career kick return touchdown for the junior from Gaithersburg (Md.) to extend his school record, and it was his first of 2016. The four KOR TDs puts Vault in a third-place tie on the all-time Big Ten list with Michigan State’s DeAndra Cobb.
This is the first Big Ten special teams honor for Vault, as well. The last Wildcat to be named the player of the week in this category was Jack Mitchell, in 2014.
