Northwestern lands first 2017 commit

It may have taken longer than expected, and after they swung and missed on a few higher-profile targets, but the Wildcats finally got their first 2017 commitment on Tuesday.

Three-star shooting guard Anthony Gaines committed to the Wildcats after taking an official visit over the weekend. The 6-foot-4, 180-pounder from New Hampton (N.H.) Prep announced his decision on Twitter.

Gaines picked Northwestern over 16 other offers, including Cincinnati, Dayton, Providence, St. Bonaventure and Temple. He had narrowed his list in August to a top six of Northwestern, Butler, Michigan, Cincinnati, Dayton and George Washington. (He didn't receive offers from Butler or Michigan.)

This summer, Gaines averaged 15.9 points and 9 rebounds per game to lead his Albany City Rocks AAU club to an appearance at the Nike Peach Jam.

NYCHoops.net offers this scouting report on Gaines:

"At 6-5, Gaines athleticism and wingspan create matchup problems on the offensive end. He is an outstanding rebounder for a wing and his quick leaping ability allows him to finish inside over much taller players. On defense, Gaines is extremely versatile and can guard a number of positions.

"Overall, this is an excellent pickup for Northwestern as he will be sure to make an early impact in the Big 10 with his versatility."
