Northwestern lands walkon defensive tackle

Joe Spivak had plenty of scholarship offers, but a chance to play Big Ten football and get a high-quality education at Northwestern led him to bypass those opportunities and walkon for the Wildcats.

The 6-foot-2, 292-pound defensive tackle from Lombard (Ill.) Montini Catholic announced today that he committed to Northwestern as a preferred walkon.

Spivak, an unranked prospect, had collected a total of 10 offers. His list included Central Michigan, Kent State and Western Michigan from the MAC, as well as Air Force, Nevada, Wyoming and several FCS programs. He also was getting recruiting interest from Ivy League schools, as well as Missouri and Illinois.

Spivak recently visited Evanston for the Indiana game in October.

Northwestern has one scholarship defensive tackle in its Class of 2017, Sam Miller, as well as two defensive ends.
