Two Northwestern Class of 2017 commitments went into the weekend with a chance to win a state championship last weekend, and both of them came home with a trophy.
Safety Austin Hiller and wide receiver Berkeley Holman won state titles in Texas and California, respectively, to cap their high school careers.
Hiller, Lake Travis get it right this time
Last year, Austin Hiller and Austin (Texas) Lake Travis made it all the way to the state title game and lost, 34-7. This year, however, the Cavaliers wound up on the winning sideline.
Lake Travis rolled over The Woodlands in a 41-13 victory to claim the Texas Class 6A championship.
"We were ready," said Hiller. “We had the experience from last year; we’ve seen the bright lights and crazy emotions that come from this game.”
He also knew they players around him. “I'd known this group was special for a long time,” Hiller said this week. “A lot of us played pee-wee football together since we were second- or third-graders.”
On the opening drive, Austin Hiller, 6-foot-2, 205-pound safety, chased down speedy The Woodlands quarterback Eric Schmid for no gain to force a punt. The Cavaliers defense was dynamite throughout the playoffs as they held four of their opponents to less than 10 points.
Lake Travis got off to another fast start, scoring on its first possession for the 15th consecutive game. The Woodlands, meanwhile, began the game with four consecutive three-and-outs. By halftime, the Cavaliers had built a 27-6 lead and had the game well in hand
It is Lake Travis’ sixth Texas title since 2007, but the first since 2011.
Final score notwithstanding, Lake Travis knew they were up against a tough opponent. The Woodlands, alma mater of retired Northwestern superback Jayme Taylor, was the only team defeat to defeat Allen (Tex.), which finished the season at No. 1 in the Associated Press and produced current Wildcat guard Brad North.
Lake Travis finished the season with a record of 15-1 and a No. 10 national ranking by USA Today.
Holman and Bosco live up to the hype
Berkeley Holman caught a 16-yard touchdown as part of a 7-reception, 95-yard performance to help lead Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco to win the CIF state championship, 56-33, over Concord De La Salle.
The Braves fell behind 7-0 but used their high-powered offense to post a comfortable win over a powerhouse program.
“I’m just so happy for the kids, they never lost faith,” said said Bosco coach Jason Negro, his jacket covered in a thin sheet of ice thanks to a celebratory Gatorade bucket bath and Sacramento’s 34-degree weather. “They believed all year, they really did.”
Holman’s touchdown catch from quarterback Re-Al Mitchell gave Bosco a 35-17 halftime lead. Mitchell, a 2018 quarterback who was also offered by Northwestern, proved that he’s one of the best players in the area, finishing 18-for-20 passing for 191 yards and two scores. Bosco's dual-threat rushing attack of Terrance Beasley and Demetrious Flowers combined for five touchdowns.
In all, Bosco rushed the ball a whopping 60 times for 357 yards. That included 150 yards and two touchdowns from Terrance Beasley and 91 yards and three more scores from Demetrious Flowers.
It was the most points given up by a De La Salle team since 1979, when legendary coach Bob Ladouceur took over the program and turned it into a national power.
Mitchell knew who to thank for Bosco’s prolific offense. "We have to credit our leaders right guard Tavita Moe (321 pounds) and Ohio State-committed left guard Wyatt Davis (311 pounds)," he said.
Bosco finished the season 13-2 and ranked 7th in the nation by USA Today.
