Meet Sam Stovall

Sam Stovall
Sam Stovall (Rivals.com)

Sam Stovall is a classic movie buff whose favorite movie is The Godfather.

So to put things in those terms, Stovall signed with Northwestern today because last December, on the day before the early signing period opened, offensive line coach Adam Cushing “made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.”

The two-star offensive lineman from Chattanooga (Tenn.) Notre Dame was all set to sign with Western Kentucky on Dec. 20. But on Dec. 19, Cushing offered him a scholarship to Northwestern over the phone. He immediately postponed signing with the Hilltoppers and arranged an official visit to Northwestern on the weekend of Jan. 12.

Stovall said that Northwestern was “the only school I would even consider decommitting from Western Kentucky for.” That’s exactly what happened. He decommitted from WKU and then, one day after returning from that official visit to Evanston, the 6-foot-4.5, 280-pounder committed to the fourth offensive lineman in the class.

Learn more about one of Northwestern’s newest lineman and cinephile, who also considers Cool Hand Luke to be one of his favorite classics.

What does signing day mean to you? To me, signing day is the official beginning of the next chapter of my life.

No. 1 reason you chose Northwestern: The reason I chose Northwestern is because of the academic excellence that the institution can boast, along with the great atmosphere that the program has.

Three words that describe you: Respectful, dedicated, honest

Potential major: Sports media/journalism

Career goal (after a long NFL career, of course): I would love to someday work for a sports news outlet, such as ESPN, Sports Illustrated or Barstool Sports. (Why not Rivals?)

Favorite music: Country

Role model as a player: Joe Thomas

Highlight of your high school career: During a game of my sophomore year, I ran 35 yards downfield to make a block that opened up a touchdown. This block is what sparked the recruiting process for me. (35 yards?! Maybe Sam will drop 40 pounds and become a superback.)

When I’m not playing football, I’m usually... Either working out or handing out with my friends.
