Roundup: Jefferson catches 5 TDs in rout

Here's our weekly Recruit Roundup of what Northwestern's Class of 2018 commitments did last week as they head into games tonight.

Wide receiver Jacob Jefferson caught nine passes for 161 yards and five touchdowns for Houston (Tex.) St. Pius X in a 69-14 win over Houston's Chavez.

For the season, Jefferson has 29 catches for 562 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Amazingly, Jefferson’s five TD catches were just half of the number thrown by St. Pius X quarterback Grant Gunnell. The Texas A&M-bound QB tied the Texas state record with 10 touchdown passes in the game. He completed 24 of 29 passes for 503 yards. If Gunnels keeps up his current pace, he could challenge the state single-record of 77 TD passes.

St. Pius X will have their 3-0 record on the line when facing Bryan Rudder.

Probable superback Charlie Mangieri is playing both tight end and middle linebacker for Dunlap (Ill.), and he made an impact on both sides of the ball in the Eagles’ 41-14 win over the Morton Potters.

Mangieri scored a three-yard TD for Dunlap's second score of the game, and was also credited with five tackles and a nifty 12-yard reception as Dunlap scored on its first possession and defense dominated in a clash of unbeaten Mid-Illini Conference football teams.

It took Morton 16 minutes to gain a first down, and that was after a personal foul was called on Dunlap’s defense.

“Our defense, initially in the first half, played really, really well,” head coach Brett Cazalet said. “They tackled well in pursuit of the ball. Their offense did some stuff that we hadn’t seen before and our kids adjusted well to it.”

Mangieri lined up at quarterback in a wildcat formation and took the direct snap for a three-yard touchdown run to give the a 13-0 lead with 2:09 left in the first quarter.

“I’m blessed that coach Caz gave me the opportunity to run the ball,” Mangieri said. “I don’t know if that’s why he called it wildcat, because I’m going to Northwestern, but it’s pretty special.”

Dunlap is ranked fourth in Illinois Class 5A.

Luke Bennyhoff led Dunlap with 16 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles will look to remain unbeaten on Friday night aainst the Washington Panthers.

Defensive end Devon O'Rourke and the Frankfort (Ill.) Lincoln-Way Griffins fell behind in the first half against rival New Lenox Lincoln-Way Central. But after trailing 14-0 at the break, L-W East rallied to win 28-14.

East's defense, led by the front four of O'Rourke, Ben Ravetto, Jaden Hacha, and Dylan Shelton, completely shut down the Central Knights in the second half.

Central's offense finished with 163 yards.

"Our defense played great," coach Henning said. "They've been doing the job all season."

Griffins' sophomore running back A.J. Henning, who already holds an offer from Northwestern, was the hero of the game after running for 98 yards on just six carries in the second half and scoring two touchdowns, one on a 51-yard TD reception. East quarterback Brendan Morrissey rushed for 132 yards on 13 carries, including an 83-yard touchdown run. He also completed 4-of-5 passes for 87 yards.

East (5-0, 3-0), the No. 1 team in Illinois, will take on another unbeaten, No. 6 Homewood-Flossmoor, on Friday night.

Safety Greg Newsome had four tackles and an interception for Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy, which held on to its No. 2 ranking in USA Today's after the Ascenders pulled away for a late 24-15 win against No. 5 Miami Central.

Central led 9-3 at halftime, but IMG took a 10-9 lead when Xavier Thomas recovered a blocked punt in the end zone. It was IMG’s second blocked punt of the game. For the season, IMG has blocked four punts in three games, two of them for scores.

IMG Academy may be an elite program, but it is still subject to Mother Nature. After waiting twenty days for a game, a lightning delay meant they only got two plays from scrimmage before waiting almost two more hours to resume action.

IMG Academy (3-0) will have a face-to-face with Miami Northwestern next.

Linebacker Grayson Mann had two sacks for the Fort Worth (Tex.) All Saints in a 35-21 win over Midland (Tex.) Christian.

In another tilt between private schools, All Saints (4-0) came into the game ranked No. 1 in Division I, while MCS (3-1) was No. 1 in Division II.

All Saints did a solid job of slowing down dangerous MCS quarterback Peyton Powell and the MCS Mustang offense, although Powell still rushed for 128 yards, passed for 118 and accounted for three TDs.

"I knew they had a great defense," MCS coach Greg McClendon said. "They've got a guy going to Northwestern on there, and they've got a guy going to Rice at the outside edges, and they're able to do some containing. And then they've got a lot of big guys inside.

"They're good, they've got a good football team. I don't see a weak spot. They also have a big offensive line and a good running back."

Holding their perfect record, All Saints can take it easy until a Oct. 6 matchup with Mesquite Dallas Christian.

Linebacker Jaylen Rivers recorded only one tackle for the Loganville (Ga.) Grayson Rams, but who needs much help when you win 74-0?

A remarkable 16 different players were on the offensive stat sheet as Grayson pounded Hollywood (Fla.) International School of Broward. Matters got out of control early as Grayson scored 43 points in the first quarter alone.

The Rams opened with a 39-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage and wouldn't let up. After scoring 66 points in the first half, Grayson scored only eight in the third quarter and managed none in the fourth while playing backups.

The Rams still have their national ranking in addition to being No. 1 in the state of Georgia. They've been playing many interstate games and will have another as Birmingham (Ala.) Ramsay will be paying a visit on Friday night.

Safety Jeremiah McDonald recorded 13 tackles, four assists, and a fumble recovery, but the Slidell (La.) Northshore Panthers lost a tight contest, 23-17, at Covington (La.) St. Paul's.

With three minutes left in the game, Northshore was moving the ball well, down by just six points. Then St. Paul's senior linebacker Paul Gremillion came away with a sack to all but secure the win for the Wolves.

Northshore was the first to score in the game, a 36-yard field goal by junior Andrew Stein. The Panthers then got a safety on a botched snap to push their lead to 5-0.

The Wolves quickly scored 13 unanswered points to take the lead as junior quarterback Johntae McDowell threw both touchdown passes. Northshore could never regain the lead.

The Panthers (2-2) will try to maintain composure against Mandeville Fontainebleu.

Future DE Andrew Leota and the Asheville (N.C.) Cougars continued their hot streak with a 43-7 win against Enka.

Asheville, which opened the season 0-3, now improbably has a .500 record. The Cougars last two wins have been by 27 and 36 points, respectively.

The Cougars will get a chance to extend their winning streak to four games against Hendersonville North.

Offensive guard Wyatt Blake's Crystal Lake (Ill.) Central rolled to a 45-7 win over Hampshire as six touchdowns were spread across five different players.

Braden Bisram found an open field on his second carry, a 61-yard run to start a big night. Bisram’s early run helped Crystal Lake Central (4-1, 3-1 among the Fox Valley Conference) set up the passing game, and Tigers quarterback Jake Staples was able to connect with three different receivers on the next possession before he ran the ball in from 2-yards out for their second score.

The next four touchdowns would all be throws from Staples.

“The first drive of the game Bisram [scored]. So that opened up a lot. They were playing a lot of man-on-man” Staples said. “[Our receivers] were making plays and getting open.”

Fox Valley conference action continues for CLC against Algonquin Jacobs.

Offensive tackle Charlie Schmidt's Libertyville (Ill.) Wildcats jumped out to a quick 19-0 lead en route to a 26-10 win against the Lake Forest (Ill.) Scouts.

Libertyville (3-2) will meet Lincolnshire Stevenson for its next conference game on Friday night.

Offensive lineman Payne He'bert and Pearland (Tex.) Dawson had a 28-0 first quarter lead against Houston Dobie and coasted to a 38-0 win.

The season has been delayed by Hurricane Harvey, but Dawson has risen to the challenge. The game was over after the first quarter when the Eagles scored 28 points on three offensive touchdowns and a pick-6, when Isaiah Chance gathered in a tipped ball and raced down the left sidelines for a 65-yard touchdown.

Dawson owned a 159-45 advantage in total yardage after the opening 12 minutes. Quarterback Patrick Kramer threw touchdown passes of 40 and 37 yards.

Richmond Georgia Ranch in next on the docket on October 5.

QB Jason Whittaker was held out of action as his Rockford (Mich.) Rams had the pleasure of going against winless Grand Haven (Mich.) on Friday and took a 39-10 victory.

This Friday night brings another conference showdown, as Rockford (3-2, 2-0 conference) takes on Grandville (4-1, 3-0).

Superback commit Brian Kaiser is back in action for Winnetka (Ill.) New Trier after missing three games with a concussion, but he wasn't a factor as the Trevians beat Evanston 27-17 on Thursday night.

New Trier quarterback Carson Ochsenhirt was just 4 for 10 for 53 yards and an interception passing as the Trevians stuck to their ground game. He did not target Kaiser once.

Ochsenhirt ran 22 times for 134 yards and a touchdown, while running back Brian Sitzer had 102 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries for New Trier (4-2, 2-0), which also got a pair of field goals from kicker Graham Dable.

Kaiser returned to the New Trier lineup on Sept. 15 but didn't make an impact in an easy 52-13 win over Skokie Niles West.

Up next for New Trier is Skokie Niles North on Oct. 6.

Record-setting tailback Isaiah Bowser the Sidney (Ohio) Yellow Jackets will face Piqua (Ohio).

Linebacker Khalid Jones and Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes will take their 5-0 count to meet Spartanburg.
