Northwestern defensive end Devin O'Rourke recorded eight tackles, including three sacks, and also played on the offensive line to lead No. 1 Frankfort (Ill.) Lincoln-Way East to a critical 29-7 win over No. 6 Flossmoor Homewood-Flossmoor.

O’Rourke hadn't played on the offensive line since he was a freshman, but he took on the assignment with zeal.

"I'm used to attacking on defense," O'Rourke said. "It's been a little different blocking. It's a little tiring going both ways, but it's fun when we score and celebrate."

Running back Ryan Scianna had much to celebrate. The senior rushed for 83 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. His two-yard scoring run in the second quarter extended the Griffins' lead to 14-0 and his one-yarder in the third quarter made it 21-7.

L-W East (6-0), the consensus No. 1 in both the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times, returns home as the 4-0 Southwest Suburban Conference leader. They have a game against Lockport this Friday.

Record-breaking rusher Isaiah Bowser finished with 186 yards on 37 carries and three touchdowns as Sidney (Ohio) Yellowjackets scored a razor's edge 34-33 victory in the late going for the “Battered Helmet” traveling trophy at Piqua (Ohio).

Bowser had a touchdown run of 30 yards and two from one yard out. On the second one-yard score, Bowser needed to recover his own fumble in the end zone. Despite all that, his biggest play came at linebacker defending against a crucial two-point conversion attempt.

Down 7-0 in the first quarter, they rode Bowser's efforts to rally to 21-7 lead. Piqua came roaring back to make it 27-27 with nine minutes to play. Sidney scored another touchdown, but so did Piqua, and the Indians took a gamble on a two-point conversion attempt with 45 seconds left. Bowser and the Yellowjackets' defense stuffed the attempt and got the win.

Sidney is riding their 6-0 record, the school's best in a generation, to host Tipp City Tippecanoe in the Great Western Ohio Conference.

Wide receiver Jacob Jefferson caught 12 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns for Houston (Tex.) St. Pius X as they tallied a 49-0 win in non-district play against Bryan Rudder to move to 4-0.

Jefferson had touchdown receptions of 4, 8 and 50 yards along the way. St. Pius X led 7-0 after a quarter but went to intermission with a 28-0 lead after scoring a pair of touchdowns in the final five minutes of the first half.

St. Pius X was to match up against Orange Little Cypress-Mauriceville this weekend, but that game has been cancelled. With a bye week after that, the Panthers will get an extraordinary two weeks off.

They won't play again until Oct. 20, when their opponent will be no less than fellow Northwestern commit Grayson Mann's Fort Worth All Saints.

Safety Greg Newsome knocked down two passes for the Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy last weekend as the Ascenders beat Miami Northwestern 21-0.

With a stunning array of talent at their disposal, IMG has developed two varsity teams: Blue and White. Newsome is part of what is considered the more elite Blue team.

The Northwestern Bulls are considered one of the best teams in the city of Miami but had to play against IMG with other things on their minds. Bulls head coach Max Edwards suffered a medical emergency and was admitted to a hospital a few hours before kickoff.

The Bulls (3-1) started poorly, as could be expected under such circumstances. They committed four false start penalties on their first possession and allowed IMG (4-0) to score a 12-yard rushing touchdown on its first series. The Ascenders added a 24-yard receiving touchdown in the second quarter and a one-yard touchdown run in the third for the final margin.

Next up for IMG Blue is a road date against the Ocala (Fla.) Trinity Catholic Celtics.

Superback Charlie Mangieri caught three passes for 37 yards for the Dunlap (Ill.) Eagles in a 28-14 win road win over the Washington (Ill.) Panthers.

Now 6-0, Dunlap is firmly in control of the Mid-Illini conference.

It wasn't just receptions that Mangieri could take credit for. “The line was blocking well and all the guys were pulling great,” said quarterback Luke Bennyhoff, who scored all four of Dunlap's touchdowns and rang up 225 yards rushing. “Charlie had a couple good blocks on the linebackers and it just let me go free.”

The opposing staff recognized Mangieri as well.

“They were what we said they were going to be; we knew they were going to be tough,” Washington coach Darrell Crouch said. “Bennyhoff is a tough runner. Mangieri is a tough blocker for them. They managed the game pretty well offensively and they churned some clock (in the) first half and second half.”

Mangieri also plays linebacker for the Eagles and tallied an important sack late in the game, helping quash any idea of a Panthers rally in the fourth quarter.

Dunlap hosts the Metamora (Ill.) Cardinals on Friday before going into a bye week.

Safety Jeremiah McDonald had four solo tackles and four more assists as Slidell (La.) Northshore took a 14-0 win over the Mandeville Fontainebleu Bulldogs.

Northshore grudgingly allowed only 100 yards in total offense, sacking Fontainebleu quarterback Dawson Nelson six times for minus-35 yards. The Panthers also intercepted three passes, recovered a fumble, and blocked a field goal attempt by the Dawgs.

“We knew we had to be solid with our technique,”said Northshore defensive coordinator Jeff Mills. “We played unselfishly. We kept our position and made some big plays. I have the same respect for the guys who hold their positions as for the guys who make the big plays.”

Now at 3-2 overall, Northshore is ranked No. 7 in St. Tammany Parish and looks to remain stable in this week’s game against the Mandeville Skippers.

Linebacker Khalid Jones tallied an interception, two solo tackles, and three assists, but his best efforts were not enough as the Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes Rebels lost for the first time this season, 21-14, to the Spartanburg (S.C.) Vikings last Friday.

Defense carried both teams for most of the night. The Vikings couldn’t muster much offensively against the Byrnes defense, particularly inside the 30. Meanwhile, Spartanburg's defense was simply lights-out. Byrnes was held to negative rushing yardage until well into the second half and finished with 17 yards rushing on 26 carries.

Next up for Byrnes is another game in Spartanburg, this time against Boiling Springs.

Defensive end Andrew Leota enjoyed a 51-14 win for the Asheville (N.C.) Cougars at the expense of Hendersonville (N.C.) North.

The fact that Asheville pulled its starters after halftime and the mercy rule and a running clock was instituted in the second half pretty much describes it all.

"We just had to come out here and dominate like we practiced all week and keep it going." said Corey Clement, a crucial two-way player for Asheville who wound up with four touchdowns in the first half, including a 35-yard interception return, and six in all.

The Cougars showed why they will be one of the frontrunners in the Western Mountain Athletic Conference as they were running on all cylinders early. On North’s first play, from the Knights 23-yard line, the Asheville defense pounced on a loose ball. Four snaps later, Clement was trotting into the end zone for the first of his half dozen TDs.

Now at 4-3 (4-0 in conference play), Waynesville (N.C.) Tuscola will be their next opponent.

Linebacker Jaylen Rivers let the Loganville (Ga.) Grayson offense do the heavy lifting in a 42-16 win from visiting Birmingham (Ala.) Ramsay.

Grayson (5-0) scored 14 points in the first quarter, another 14 in the second, and only gave up a safety with less than a minute before halftime. Quarterback D.J. Irons (10-of-18 passing for 194 yards and four total touchdowns) tossed a pair of second-quarter TDs, the first for 23 yards to Kenyon Jackson. By the time Ramsay managed to get a touchdown, Grayson was already letting reserves get playing time.

Going into the game Grayson was concerned with the usual issues for any football team: “No. 1, we need to eliminate stupid penalties and turnovers,” coach Christian Hunnicutt said. “We have to make sure we take care of the ball and don’t even put the ball in jeopardy.”They succeeded.

The victory ensured that Grayson’s USA Today No. 13 national ranking remains safe. They’ll finally begin conference play at Snellville Shiloh this week.

As reported in last week’s Recruit Roundup, superback Brian Kaiser's Winnetka (Ill.) New Trier Trevians won 27-17 right in NU's backyard against the Evanston Wildkits last Thursday. It was yet another installment in a long-standing rivalry that has seen New Trier win seven in a row.

Rushing dominated the night and Kaiser was not a target on a 4-of-10 passing night from Trevians quarterback Carson Ochsenhirt.

New Trier, now 4-2 overall and 2-0 in league play, takes on Skokie Niles North next. This is remarkable because Niles North previously had their entire season cancelled due to a hazing scandal. It wasn't until Monday night that high school District 219 decided to reinstate Niles North's varsity football operations, thus keeping the New Trier game on the docket.

Quarterback Jason Whittaker did not play as his Rockford (Mich.) Rams won 27-0 at Grandville (Mich.).

The Rams hardly needed Whittaker, building a 14-0 lead at halftime and coasting to the finish while allowing Grandville just 68 yards of total offense.

Next is another conference game, this time at Holland West Ottawa.

Offensive guard Wyatt Blake's Crystal Lake (Ill.) Central Tigers allowed three turnovers, a partially blocked punt and 15 penalties. That was too much for just about any team to overcome and they lost 35-18 to Algonquin (Ill.) Jacobs.

"We left points off the board," CL Central head coach Jon McLaughlin said. "We were down inside the 15- or 20-yard line three or four times and came away with nothing.”

The Jacobs defense poached three interceptions, including two by sophomore RJ Anderson deep in CL Central territory. Their defense also totaled five sacks, four of which came from lineman Eric Schutt.

"We consider every game from here on out a playoff game," said Schutt. "So we're making them must-win situations, so we're going into it like a playoff game."

It seemed that way from the get-go, as Jacobs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Quarterback Stephen Kavanaugh ended a nine play, 53-yard drive with a seven-yard run to go up 7-0 with 8:25 left in the first, and Jacobs never relinquished the lead.

Now at 4-2 (3-2 in the Fox Valley Conference), CL Central will travel to Huntley on Friday night.

Offensive tackle Charlie Schmidt and the Libertyville (Ill.) Wildcats drifted back to a .500 record after a 24-10 loss against rival Lincolnshire Stevenson.

Stevenson drew first blood when Libertyville, pinned back to its own 5-yard line, fumbled a snap that Stevenson recovered for a touchdown. Things didn’t get much better for the Wildcats after that.

Stevenson’s JeanMarc Etienne took an inside handoff on a fourth down play, bounced between the guards and broke free into the secondary, spinning into the end zone for the 12-yard score to put Stevenson up 14-0 and Libertyville never threatened again.

Schmidt's team will work to push their 3-3 record (2-2 in conference) back to the positive side against Mundelein.

Inside linebacker Grayson Mann Ft. Worth (Tex.) All Saints Episcopal Saints return to action this weekend against the Mesquite Dallas Christian Chargers.

Offensive tackle Payne He'bert and Pearland (Tex.) Dawson will face Houston George Ranch on Thursday night.
