Cats add speed to 2018 class with Jefferson

Northwestern added a dose of speed to its Class of 2018.

Three-star wide receiver Jacob Jefferson of Houston (Texas) St. Pius X committed to head coach Pat Fitzgerald on Saturday to become the ninth member of the Wildcats’ rapidly growing class.

Jefferson’s commitment was reported by WildcatReport on The Rock on Saturday and confirmed on Sunday.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Jefferson is the first true speedster of the Wildcats’ class. The rest of the group is made up of three offensive linemen, two defensive ends, two superbacks and a quarterback.

Jefferson chose Northwestern over offers from Rice and New Mexico. He pulled the trigger during an overnight visit to Evanston this weekend.

Jefferson had 71 catches for 1,241 yards and 15 touchdowns for St. Pius X in 2016, according to his Hudl highlights. He averaged 18.2 yards per catch and 115.8 yards receiving per game.

St. Pius X is the same high school program that produced former Northwestern star Venric Mark. Fans wouldn't mind seeing Jefferson's career follow the same trajectory as Mark, who also came out of Pius X as a wide receiver and turned into a 2012 All-America punt returner and 1,000-yard rusher for the Wildcats.

Northwestern's class is now ranked 11th in the nation by Rivals.
