Crawford named Academic All-American

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's Drew Crawford has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America ® First Team as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Thursday. This is Crawford's second Academic All-America Award after he garnered second team recognition as a junior in 2012.
Including Crawford, there have been eight Northwestern men's basketball players to earn the distinction of Academic All-America. Today, the Naperville, Ill., native becomes only the fourth member of the NU men's basketball fraternity to receive first-team honors, joining Jim Burns (1967), Mike Campbell (1980) and Shon Morris (1987 & 1988).

A three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Crawford graduated from Northwestern University in spring 2013 with a 3.31 grade-point average (GPA) and a degree in economics. With one more season of eligibility available, Crawford remained at NU under first-year head coach Chris Collins and enrolled in the School of Continuing Studies to obtain a master's degree in sports administration. He has excelled in that program, maintaining a 3.9 GPA.
On the court, Crawford leads the Wildcats in scoring (15.9 ppg), rebounding (6.7 rpg) and minutes per game (36.0). His name is also prominently dotted throughout the NU record book. The co-captain notably ranks third all-time in scoring with 1,831 points, sixth in blocked shots with 95, and seventh in rebounding 681. He has also played (137) and started (136) more games than any player in program annals.
Earlier this season, Crawford was named the USBWA's Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week and the Big Ten Co-Player of the Week after averaging 23.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in helping Northwestern secure memorable victories at No. 14/13 Wisconsin (Jan. 29) and at Minnesota (Feb. 1).
Crawford is joined on the Capital One Academic All-America first team by Brayden Carlson of South Dakota State, Aaron Craft of Ohio State, Melvin Ejim of Iowa State and J.J. Mann of Belmont.
Crawford and the Wildcats hit the hardwood next on Saturday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The 'Cats will welcome the Indiana Hoosiers to Evanston for a 7:15 p.m. Tip.
