Superback Charlie Mangieri had a forced fumble as his Dunlap (Ill.) Eagles posted a historic 49-20 victory over winless Bartonville Limestone.

The win clinched a share of Dunlap’s first Mid-Illini Conference championship.

A series of Luke Bennyhoff runs ended with his scoring the first of his four touchdowns on an 8-yard scamper through the Limestone defense. Moments later, Bennyhoff recovered Mangieri's forced fumble and returned it 27 yards into the end zone to help double the Dunlap lead at 14-0 with 6:12 to play in the first quarter.

The Eagles eventually built a 28-0 lead before Limestone got on the scoreboard in the second quarter. Dunlap scored 21 points in the second half to coast to its eighth win without a defeat.

“They’re really physical,” Limestone head coach Darin Driscoll said. “That’s the most physical Dunlap team I’ve seen since I’ve been coaching here. They’re hitting. Bennyhoff is flying around hitting, and of course Mangieri’s all over the place. Their defense is tough.”

“Nobody else has shared or won the conference other than Metamora or Washington, I believe, since 2003,” Dunlap coach Brett Cazalet said. “We’d like to win it outright, but we’ve gotta win next week. We’re 100 percent going to be focused on a very good Canton team.”

That potential victory at Canton would allow Dunlap (8-0, 6-0 in the Mid-Illini conference) to claim the title for itself next week.

Bowser's perfect season comes to an end

Isaiah Bowser had his lowest statistical performance of the year with only 87 total yards as Troy defeated Sidney 48-21, ending the Sidney (Ohio) Yellowjackets' perfect season. Though Bowser has seemingly created rushing performances of over 200 yards at will this year, almost all of the team's seven wins have come with a margin of victory under 10 points. This week their luck ran out.

Bowser got a scant 68 yards on 24 carries, adding 19 yards on 5 receptions. After a scoreless first quarter, Troy took a 20-0 lead at the break, including a pair of scoring runs by Sam Jackson and a field goal.

Sidney finally got on the board in the third quarter when Keith Lee hauled in a scoring pass from Andre Gordon to cut it to 20-7, but the celebration didn’t last long as Troy’s Shane Shoop took the ensuing kickoff 76 yards to the end zone.

Troy finished with 480 yards in offense while holding Sidney to 224. “It seems like it has not been the best of luck for us,” Sidney coach Adam Doenges said. “They are a good team. Their best beat our best. They just took it away.”

Bowser and Sidney (7-1, 2-1 Great Western Ohio Conference North division) will have their last two games of the regular season on away turf, starting with Vandalia Butler this Friday.

O'Rourke, Lincoln Way East run away early

Devin O'Rourke's undefeated Frankfort (Ill.) Lincoln-Way East Griffins moved to 8-0 after a 49-6 win over South Holland Thornwood.

Brendan Morrissey scored a 35-yard touchdown with about 11 minutes to play in the first quarter, then Jordan Pallissard scored from 2 yards to give the Griffins a 14-0 lead. The second quarter saw them extend their lead by another 23 points.

Chicago Sun-Times football writer Beth Long has LW East as the top team in the “Super 25” and without much question. The Associated Press agrees that the Griffins are the best in Illinois Class 8A. They can finish with an undefeated record with a win at Bolingbrook.

It was an additional bonus that O'Rourke was named to the roster of the Under Armour All-America game next January.

Another easy win for Jones, Byrnes

Linebacker Khalid Jones racked up three solo tackles and added six assists, totaling 2.5 tackles for loss, as the Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes Rebels rolled to a 31-0 win over Ft. Mill Nation Ford.

Byrnes piled up 497 total yards and 22 first downs, while limiting the Falcons to 144 yards and only six first downs. They took the ball on the opening kickoff and marched down the field, but had to settle for a 19-yard field goal by Luis Hernandez with 6:59 left in the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead.

Quarterback Brock Carroll threw the first of his two scoring passes to Ben Henson for a 10-0 lead with 2:06 in the first quarter, then added another score before halftime. The Carroll-to-Henson connection worked six times for 110 yards on Henson's behalf.

The non-regional game boosted Byrnes' record to 7-1. Jones and the Rebels return to regional play for their last two regular season games, starting with the Gaffney Indians.

Whittaker quiet again for Rockford

Quarterback Jason Whittaker was not much of a factor in his first game back from injury in the Rockford (Mich.) Rams’ 24-10 win against the East Kentwood Falcons.

Directing a run-heavy wing-T offense, Whittaker was 0-for-6 passing. His backup, Drew Bareno, didn't do much better, completing his only throw for -3 yards.

Rockford's Maliq Thompson broke a scoreless tie with a one-yard in the second quarter to give the Rams 7-0 lead. The game was tied at 10 late in the third quarter when Rockford's Chase Novak blocked a field goal attempt and Marcus Remtema returned it 80 yards to give the Rams the 17-10 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Rockford closed out the scoring with another TD run by Thompson, who finished with 121 yards rushing.

With a 5-3 record, the Rams can set themselves in better post-season position in the OK Red conference when they finish with their rivalry game at home against the Hudsonville Eagles.

Kaiser, New Trier overwhelmed by Maine South

Tight end Brian Kaiser and Winnetka (Ill.) New Trier couldn't get on the scoreboard until the late going as Park Ridge Maine South (7-1, 4-0 in conference) crushed the Trevians 45-7.

No. 2 Maine South built up a 45-0 lead and the mercy rule running clock took effect at the 10:05 mark of the final quarter on a 2-yard run by Paul Sasso.

Trevians junior quarterback Carson Ochsenhirt (4-of-12, 41 yards passing) had a tough night. The signal caller rushed for a team-high 35 yards on 15 carries, while the other NT ball carriers ran for a combined 48 yards.

The Maine South Hawks used a familiar formula to win: passing by John O’Sullivan, running by Fotis Kokosioulis and an aggressive defense that forced New Trier into four turnovers. Three of them were interceptions, including one by Ryan Kilburg, who returned a pick-off 30 yards to set up a Maine South touchdown. Kilburg also recovered a Trevian fumble that led to a second quarter field goal by Aiden Carolan.

The lone New Trier touchdown came with 2:56 left to play on a 2-yard pass against the Maine South reserves.

The Trevians (5-3, 3-1) hope to end the season on a high note when they play at Glenview's Glenbrook South.

McDonald, Northshore tuning up for playoffs

Safety Jeremiah McDonald had two solo tackles, assisted on two more and forced a fumble in the Slidell (La.) Northshore Panthers’ 23-0 win against Hammond.

The Panthers certainly didn't hurt their playoff chances as they head into the final three-game stretch of the regular season.

The Covington Tornadoes will be at Slidell to take on the Panthers (4-3, 2-2) this weekend.

Winning streak snapped for Leota, Asheville

Defensive end Andrew Leota and his Asheville (N.C.) Cougars ran into a buzzsaw, getting walloped 35-0 in a rivalry game against the A.C. Reynolds Rockets to halt a five-game winning streak.

The Rockets' defense held Asheville’s running game to minus-9 total yards, including Cougar senior Corey Clement, who entered Friday’s game with 770 rushing yards. Reynolds was certainly ready for the match.

“We knew coming in that this game was probably going to decide the conference champion,” Reynolds senior defensive end Talon James said.

“They just really keyed on me all game,” Clement said. “We passed all day on them, but we couldn’t get anything going in our run game.”

Asheville sophomore quarterback Three Hillier finished with 245 passing yards, completing 17-of-34 passes, but was intercepted twice in the second half.

Asheville (5-4, 5-1 in conference) will get a week off before facing Weaverville North Buncome. Reynolds pushed its conference winning streak to 21 games.

Late field goal stuns Rivers, Grayson

The Loganville (Ga.) Grayson Rams, with star linebacker Jaylen Rivers, were stunned in a 6-3 loss to Lawrenceville Archer. The loss was not only a setback to the USA Today No. 7 program in the nation but also derailed Grayson's 20-game winning streak.

Tied at 3-3 since late in the second quarter, only 7:39 remained in regulation when Archer defensive back Andrew Booth caught his second interception of a D.J. Irons pass and returned it 27 yards to the Rams’ 14-yard line. A few plays later, Michael Johnson kicked a 28-yard field goal for what turned out to be the winning margin.

Irons threw for 230 yards and ran for 41, but he was harassed all night by an aggressive Archer defense led by Emmanuel Michel. Grayson’s top rusher was Jonathan Halyard, who was thrust into the lineup due to injuries to Camron Thompson and Ronald Thompkins (torn ACL). Halyard carried 13 times for 40 yards.

The setback notwithstanding, Grayson (6-1) will look to regroup against Covington Newton.

Mann, All Saints stay undefeated

Inside linebacker Grayson Mann had four tackles, including a sack, assisted on another, and even blocked a punt as the Ft. Worth (Tex.) All Saints Episcopal Saints were 46-16 winners on the road over the Alvin Shadow Creek Sharks.

All Saints (6-0) will put its undefeated season on the line this weekend in a big faceoff with Jacob Jefferson and Houston St. Pius X.

Blake, Central clinch playoff berth

Offensive guard Wyatt Blake and the Crystal Lake (Ill.) Central Tigers are playoff-eligible for the first time since 2014 with a 42-28 win over Carpentersville Dundee-Crown.

The Tigers (5-3, 4-3 in the Fox Valley Conference) picked up their fifth victory in large part because of the effort of senior quarterback Jake Staples, who was 15-for-24 passing for 243 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. He also ran the ball 15 times for 117 yards and a pair of TDs. Senior running back Braden Bisram (15 carries, 62 yards) also found the end zone twice on the ground.

"Becoming playoff-eligible means the world to us seniors, especially after the struggles we went through a year ago," Staples said. "Last season, we lost seven straight games at one point. The last time we were playoff-eligible was when I was a freshman."

A final game against Cary-Grove can cement the Tigers’ playoff status this weekend.

Schmidt, Libertyville drilled

Offensive tackle Charlie Schmidt's Libertyville (Ill.) Wildcats had little chance with undefeated Lake Zurich, losing by a count of 40-14.

"Some of his throws tonight were like darts going in there," four-star Lake Zurich linebacker Jack Sanborn said of quarterback Evan Lewandowski, who became Lake Zurich's career leader in passing yards during the win on Friday's homecoming night. "I don't know how he fits the ball into those little spots sometimes,” said the Wisconsin-bound Sanborn. “He's got an arm, for sure."

Libertyville (4-4, 3-3 in conference) got a touchdown pass and touchdown run from its QB, Alex Stanulis, but spotted the hosts too big of an early lead. Lake Zurich was coming off back-to-back shutouts and held Libertyville to minus-11 yards rushing in the first half.

The Wildcats need to beat Zion-Benton at home next Friday night to become playoff-eligible.

"It's going to be a huge challenge," Libertyville coach Mike Jones said. "We're going to have our hands full."

He'bert's Homecoming win takes backseat

Offensive tackle Payne He'bert and Pearland (Tex.) Dawson won 51-16 against Clute Brazoswood, but that was hardly the interesting part of the game as placekicker Claire Jeffress was also named homecoming queen!

Details on the rest of the game's action were hardly noticed compared to a girl wearing a helmet and shoulder pads, then wearing a tiara and carrying a bouquet at halftime.

Dawson (4-1, 2-0 in District 23-6A) will stare down the crosstown rival Pearland Oilers this weekend. As unpredictable as the football race has been this fall, Friday's Dawson-Pearland match-up might just be a preamble to a second meeting, which could occur in the Division II Region 3-6A championship game. That contest would only further intensify an already spirited rivalry.

Idle

Wide receiver Jacob Jefferson Houston St. Pius X Panthers have been idle since September 29. They won't return to action until heading to Fort Worth to challenge Grayson Mann and All Saints Episcopal on October 20.

Safety Greg Newsome and the Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy Ascenders have had an abbreviated season due to hurricane troubles. Still, they hold a 5-0 record and are no less than No. 2 in the nation according to USA Today. This weekend brings them to Utah for a game against Salt Lake City East.
