Defensive end Xavier Washington has been suspended indefinitely from the Northwestern football team after getting arrested for possession of cocaine over the weekend, according to a Daily Northwestern story.
The senior from Cedar Hill (Texas) was arrested at around 3:30 Sunday morning in Evanston, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan told the Daily. Officers were initially called to a disturbance and Washington fled on foot. He had .5 grams of cocaine in his possession and was charged with one felony count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
Washington, a 6-foot-1, 243-pounder, had a career-high 38 tackles and was second on the team with 4.5 sacks in 2016. He appeared in all 13 games and made the first eight starts of his career during the season. He memorably delivered a vicious hit on Pitt’s Nathan Peterman that knocked the quarterback out of the Wildcats’ Pinstripe Bowl win in December.
An unheralded tw0-star recruit, Washington has been a valuable member of Northwestern’s defensive line since he first arrived in Evanston. He was one of just four true freshmen to see playing time in 2014 and has recorded 63 tackles and 13 TFL in his career, including 6.5 sacks.
He was expected to start at defensive end for the Wildcats this season, along with Joe Gaziano. The Wildcats lost starting defensive end C.J. Robbins and team sack leader Ifeadi Odenigbo to graduation.
If the suspension continues into the season, it will likely mean more playing time for some combination of redshirt sophomore Trent Goens and redshirt freshmen Mark Gooden and Tommy Carnifax. True freshmen Earnest Brown, Trevor Kent and Sam Miller, an early enrollee who participated in spring practice, could also be pressed into duty.
