Three-star cornerback Greg Newsome had been making the rounds to college campuses recently, visiting four schools last week.

But in the end, the Carol Stream (Ill.) Glenbard North standout committed to the school in his backyard: Northwestern.

The No. 5 player in Illinois announced his commitment on Twitter on Monday.

Newsome picked Northwestern over more than 20 other schools on his offer list, including Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pounder visited Notre Dame last weekend, and then went to Iowa, Northwestern and Michigan State on consecutive days last week. His overnight visit to NU on Thursday and Friday sealed the deal.

Newsome, ranked 30th in the nation at his position, is the 10th member of the Wildcats’ 2018 class now ranked 11th in the nation by Rivals. He is the sixth commitment from Illinois and the fifth that hails from the Chicago area.

Newsome’s Rivals Rating of 5.7 is just one tick below four-star Devin O’Rourke, the highest rated Wildcat at 5.8.

Glenbard North is also the high school program that produced Northwestern star running back Justin Jackson and 2017 wide receiver signee Jace James.
